Like many other successful companies, INNOVATiVE EYEWEAR came into being because someone didn’t want to settle for what the market had to offer. When Reinhard Gerl first became interested in colored light therapy in the early 1990s, it was performed almost exclusively with special therapy lamps and corresponding color filters. This meant that a simple application at home was impossible.
So why not absorb colored light through the eyes?
The few colored glasses available on the market at that time were of low quality and not suitable for use in therapeutic settings.
And so Reinhard Gerl decided summarily to offer a range of color glasses himself that were optimized for use in color therapy. In collaboration with experts in the field, and with experienced manufacturers, he developed the first PRiSMA color glasses, which even then had the features that still distinguish every PRiSMA product today: the optimized color frequency in unsurpassed saturation. This is how INNOVATiVE EYEWEAR became a pioneer in color therapy, with a large number of avid users all over the world.

Longing for light is the imperative of life
Knowledge of the effect of different wavelengths on the human health, as well as expertise in the production of filter glasses were the basis for finding a solution to the next big challenge.
With the triumph of energy-saving lamps, LED lighting and flat screens, an unnaturally high proportion of blue light has entered our lives. At a congress in 2007, Reinhard and Sylke Gerl met the renowned light physician Dr. Alexander Wunsch, MD, who shared his extensive knowledge
about the health effects of this artificial light with them. A fruitful collaboration resulted from this fortunate encounter of specialist knowledge and manufacturer expertise, so that INNOVATiVE EYEWEAR brought the first BluelightProtect filters to market in the same year.
This was the first time that highly effective blue light protection was available specifically for VDU work. Even after years of rapid growth, the blue light protection market still offers hardly any comparable products.
Natural light is our elixir of life. Sunlight in particular contains all the wavelengths we need for health and well-being. With PRiSMA glasses in finely tuned SpektroChrom colors, we can use individual wavelength ranges from this natural spectrum to adapt Dinshah P. Ghadiali’s Spectro-Chrome method, which has been known for over 100 years, for an ocular application.
INNOVATiVE EYEWEAR was born out of a love of light and color, and this passion carries the company to this day. Because in addition to know-how, i.e. the knowledge required to manufacture a product, there is another pillar for every successful company: From the very beginning – for almost 30 years now – we have known exactly why we do what we do: Because light fascinates us and inspires us to develop eyewear that makes people love light and experience it in a healthy way.

Artificial light is part of our everyday lives, and we often see more screens than daylight during the course of the day. The importance of this lack of natural spectral colors and the overemphasis of short-wave spectral components is unfortunately still underestimated.
Therefore, one of INNOVATiVE EYEWEAR’s main concerns is to keep educating people about light health. We closely follow the current state of studies and present the results of scientific research in a comprehensible way. Because eye protection only takes place when the necessary knowledge is also accessible.
Reinhard Gerl, the founder of INNOVATiVE EYEWEAR, discovered his true calling after his business training and studies when he recognized the effectiveness of colored light therapy and decided to make it available to everyone. The desire to offer high-quality color glasses quickly gave rise to a small but thriving company, with satisfied users all over the world.
Reinhard Gerl’s approach of putting everyone in charge of their own health and the expertise he has built up over the years in the areas of light and color led him to recognize the dangers of “modern” light sources with their unnaturally high blue content at a very early stage, long before other manufacturers began to address this issue. In close collaboration with Dr. Alexander Wunsch, MD, he developed the first generation of BluelightProtect glasses back in 2007.
It is Reinhard Gerl’s inner desire to educate people about the connection between light and health, because only with the necessary knowledge can people make the right decisions for their health. In addition to his duties as managing director, he always takes time to give presentations and support initiatives for light health; he is trained as a holistic vision trainer and in 2015 he founded the non-profit association Zukunft Sehen e.V.
Sylke Gerl, the wife of the founder, has also been active in the company since 2004 and has become managing director in 2018. With her flair for the beautiful and the true, she is not only in charge of design decisions, but is also currently revising the external image and marketing strategy of INNOVATiVE EYEWEAR. In doing so, she focuses on the values that have distinguished INNOVATiVE EYEWEAR from the very beginning. Her credo: “I know that PRiSMA eyewear is unique. We want them to convince with know-how, quality and honesty, not with advertising psychology and purchased testimonials. I personally guarantee that there is not a single bought rating on our pages.”
Even though Sylke Gerl likes to call herself a muse and bird of paradise, she brings much more than just bright colors and good ideas to the office. Not only does she keep track of the many projects, but as “Relationship Manager” she also coordinates cooperation with external partners and experts, and ensures that the company stays on track.
If sometimes the day-to-day business forces itself too much into the foreground, she always reminds people that the company’s products are first and foremost meant to be a gift for people. “A heart for light and color” is not only a beautiful slogan, but also Sylke Gerl’s personal drive.
Our BluelightProtect and SpektroChrom development partner and technology consultant, Dr. Alexander Wunsch, MD, has been contributing the indispensable expertise since 2007.
He is a physician, scientist and non-fiction author specializing in the complex of photobiological and biophysical topics. For over 30 years, he has been developing preventive and therapeutic solutions, especially for the healthy use of natural and artificial light, as well as for light hygiene and phototherapy.
His numerous publications, lectures and interviews on biophysical, light-biological and photomedical topics at home and abroad have made many people aware of the importance of light and colors for health and well-being. With the PRiSMA products from the BluelightProtect and SpektroChrom product families that have emerged from this collaboration, he provides directly applicable solutions to problems.

Terry Shi, who was diagnosed with the eye disease retinitis pigmentosa in 2015, had become aware of INNOVATiVE EYEWEAR’s blue light protection products through his intense involvement with eye health. After testing them himself, he decided, enthusiastic about the high quality and effectiveness, to make these products known also in his home country China. Since then, he has not only distributed the BluelightProtect products, but also tirelessly contributes to informing his compatriots about blue light and its effects.
