The healing power of sunlight

In recent years and in the future, no pharmaceutical laboratory in the world will develop a substance that even comes close to the many positive health properties of vitamin D. This “vitamin”, which is actually a hormone, is produced when our skin is exposed to UV-B radiation. But the sun and its light also have many other health-promoting effects.

The sun’s radiation spectrum consists of light waves of different frequencies, some of which are particularly high-energy and have strong effects. In addition to the production of vitamin D, the broad spectrum of the sun’s rays has additional positive effects on humans.
Regulated exposure to sunlight influences the circadian day-night rhythm and the melatonin and serotonin balance, which has a positive effect on metabolism, well-being and healthy sleep. Even illnesses such as depression, cancer, multiple sclerosis, high blood pressure and fibromyalgia can be alleviated by UV radiation.

Vitamin D synthesis through sunbathing is the most natural form of vitamin D supply. Modern sunbeds offer a controlled environment for similar vitamin D synthesis, whereby the intensity and duration of UV exposure can be individually adjusted.

Despite the positive effects of UV exposure on health, according to a WHO study, the costs of illness are low. However, a drastic reduction or avoidance of UV exposure would lead to significantly higher medical costs.

Widespread reporting on the dangers of the sun has led to a vitamin D deficiency epidemic in Germany. However, vitamin D is a powerful weapon in the prevention and treatment of many diseases, as it is essential for numerous bodily functions.

Vitamin D strengthens bones and muscles and reduces the risk of osteoporosis, fractures and falls improves heart muscle performance, blood pressure and vascular health strengthens the immune system and reduces the risk of respiratory diseases reduces the risk of developing cancer and supports cancer therapy reduces the risk of type 1 and type 2 diabetes protects nerve cells (Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and MS) and much more.
With the onset of spring, now is the ideal opportunity to slowly spend more time in the sunlight again. It is important to gradually increase your exposure to the sun in order to adapt the skin to the increased sunlight. This allows it to build up a protective layer, known as a “sun callus”, which makes it more resistant. This prepares you optimally for the increasingly strong sunlight, which is crucial for vitamin D synthesis, until the summer months.
Start carefully, especially if you have sensitive skin or have not been exposed to much sunlight during the winter months. A slow start with regular direct sun exposure helps to prevent burns and allows your skin to adapt gently.
This article takes a closer look at the health-promoting effects of sunlight other than vitamin D and shows why sensible sun exposure is crucial for our health.
