It’s the height of summer in Europe. The air shimmers in the heat, and green landscapes appear almost like precious havens amid news reports of forest fires and drought. In the shade of tall trees, the light seems soft, cool, and calming—as if the color itself had a protective power.
Almost 2,000 years ago, Roman Emperor Nero is said to have watched the gladiators fight in the arena through an emerald. During the Renaissance, green-tinted glasses were developed specifically for well-being and eye protection.
Today, researchers are investigating why green light is not only easy on the eye but can also influence the nervous system and even pain perception. From the amphitheaters of antiquity to modern color therapy, the history of green light is more relevant than ever—especially at a time when green is becoming the color of longing.
In Naturalis historia (Book 37, Chapter 64), Pliny the Elder writes about green stones that can act like mirrors—and then mentions the famous anecdote:
“The emperor Nero is said to have watched the gladiator fights through a reflective ‘smaragdus’.”
Whether this emerald was cut as a lens, served as a mirror, or was simply held as a precious protective stone is still a matter of debate among historians today.
One thing is certain: the idea of a ruler looking through a green filter in the middle of the noisy Colosseum has captured the imagination to this day. Some see it as the first form of “wellness glasses,” while others point out that the sources are vague and that the term “smaragdus” could have refered to various green minerals in ancient times.
So whether it was a technical aid or more of a symbolic accessory, the idea that green can make seeing more pleasant is already evident here. And perhaps this is the origin of a long history in which green light is consistently described as beneficial.
During the Italian Renaissance, glassblowing flourished, especially in Venice. Antonio Neri, a Florentine glassmaker and priest, published his work L’Arte Vetraria in 1612, in which he described detailed recipes for making colored glass. We learn how oxides – such as iron – were used to give glass a rich green color.
Glassblowers perfected these techniques on the island of Murano: in red-hot furnaces, at temperatures well above 1000 °C, sand, ash, and metal oxides were melted into a glowing, viscous mass, which was blown, cut, and polished by master craftsmen. Green glass adorned windows, drinking vessels, and mirrors—and bathed rooms in a soft, soothing light.
Initially, this play of colors was pure luxury, intended for the nobility and colorful church windows. However, in the 18th century, green glass made its debut in the field of eye health for the first time. Around 1752, English optician James Ayscough experimented with blue and green eyeglass lenses. His goal was not fashion, but comfort – he was convinced that colored glass could soften harsh light and thus relieve “weak eyes.” This was the first step toward using color for a specific effect – an idea that would later be further developed in color therapy.
After its long journey through history and craftsmanship, green light found a permanent place in color therapy in the 20th century. For decades, therapists have used the color for wellness and relaxation. This was based more on empirical knowledge than on proven findings about the mechanisms involved. Green was known for its noticeable balancing effect and for relieving strain on the nerves and eyes.
However, in recent years, scientists have begun to take a closer look and investigate the underlying causes. More and more studies are providing evidence that targeted green light can have measurable effects on pain, mood, and stress responses. Particularly exciting for us: a pilot study at Duke University used green-tinted glasses for the first time on people suffering from the chronic pain condition fibromyalgia—showing decreased anxiety and a lower need for painmedication.
This clinical study used green LED light (525 nm) daily over several weeks and showed that participants reported less pain, improved mood, and better sleep—without any side effects.
Inspired by the success of green LED treatment, this pilot study by Duke University used green-tinted glasses and found that patients experienced reduced anxiety and lower pain medication requirements—without an increase in pain intensity.
In a study involving migraine patients, daily exposure to low-intensity green light led to a reduction in the frequency and intensity of attacks and an improvement in quality of life. The authors recommend follow-up studies to investigate the mechanisms involved.
Anyone who has ever stood under a dense canopy of leaves on a hot summer day knows the special atmosphere: the light becomes softer, the colors richer, the air cooler. The eye is surrounded by a palette of green tones that can noticeably calm the heartbeat and breathing rhythm. In Japan, this conscious immersion in nature has been established since the 1980s as Shinrin-yoku – forest bathing – and is even recommended for medical reasons.
Numerous studies confirm the positive effects: spending time in green spaces lowers blood pressure and stress hormones, improves mood, and promotes concentration. Your eyes also benefit—looking into the distance relaxes the muscles and gives the photoreceptor cells a break from close-up work on the screen. An often underestimated bonus: forest light contains a high proportion of near-infrared radiation, which penetrates deep into the tissue and can support regenerative processes – an effect that we already examined in more detail in last month’s article.
Whether in a park, garden, or forest – even short, regular “green breaks” can provide noticeable relief for the body and mind.
