Our Know-Why

Loving light and Experiencing Color

12 SpektroChrom color glasses, the PRiSMA sunglasses collection, the legendary “pink glasses” and last but not least the eye mask for absolute darkness make the difference.

Light Fascinates and Consists of Colors

Light is life.

It serves plants as an energy source for the synthesis of organic substances. It controls hormonal processes in humans and animals and therefore also moods, performance and sleep quality.

Light is color.

Electromagnetic waves between 380 and 780 nanometers are visible to the human eye. In this part of the spectrum, which is physically and psychologically effective, between ultraviolet and infrared, there are many

different spectral components that have different effects on us humans. Light mixed from parts of all wavelengths of the visible spectral range appears white to us. But as soon as we fan out the light into individual wavelength ranges, the world becomes colorful.

The high-quality color filters of PRiSMA products work very specifically and efficiently with these colors to make light usable and enjoyable for us humans – just like the glass artists who designed the magnificent picture windows of the most famous churches and cathedrals that shine in all colors.

From Antiquity to the Present Day

A Brief History of Color Therapy

Color therapy may well have originated at a time when the only available bright light source was the sun. As far as we know, color (light) therapy was common in various cultures in ancient times.

For example, in ancient China, sick people were taken to rooms with windows covered by colored cloths, so that the sunlight entering the room made it radiate color. In ancient Egypt, there were believed to be color temples with differently colored rooms in which “color baths” were taken.

In Europe, too, the health effect of colors has a long tradition. The medieval mystic Hildegard von Bingen already reported in her medical writings that the green color of sprouting nature strengthens the life forces.

Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1726) is known today mainly for his work on gravity. However, he was also interested in light and color, experimented with prisms, and discovered that sunlight contains all the colors of the rainbow.

In 1810, none other than the poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) published a comprehensive scientific work “On the Theory of Colors,” which he himself considered more important than all his literary works. In addition to physical observations and the classification of colors, Goethe was also deeply invested in the effect of colors on the human psyche.

One of the first to translate these considerations into a therapeutic system was the U.S. American Dr. med. Edwin Dwight Babbitt (1828-1905), whose extensive work “The Principles of Light and Color” sparked a great deal of interest in the medical application of colored light.

The Indian physician Dinshah P. Ghadiali (1873-1966) was inspired by Babbitt’s work and, after initial treatment successes, devoted his entire life to the development and research of colored light therapy. The Spectro-Chrome method with its detailed treatment plans is owed to his meticulous passion.

Today it isprobably the best documented system for the application of colored light for health.

What is the Centerpiece

SpektroChrom is the superior color system created over 100 years ago by Indian physician and light therapy pioneer Dinshah P. Ghadiali. It is incomparably more logical and physio-logical than any other color system: its twelve colors are positioned at harmonious distances from each other, and they represent an exact gradation of the physiological effects that can be achieved with them. With SpektroChrom, therefore, a therapeutic color system is available that can be used with unique targeting precision.

The Spectro-Chrome Color Wheel ...

... the Centerpiece

“Theory” and “practice” are one in Spectro-Chrome. The Spectro-Chrome system is a delight, of unusual elegance and symmetry.

Founder of the Spectro-Chrome Method

Dinshah P. Ghadiali

Dinshah P. Ghadiali, who later simply went by the name Dinshah, was born in Bombay, India in 1873. The period of his growing up was marked by spectacular inventions and advances in science, and Dinshah was fascinated by the wonders of his time. He became involved with electricity at a very early stage and in 1896 gave lectures in the USA on X-rays, which had just been discovered. It is considered relatively certain that Dinshah set up a complementary medicine practice in India at the age of 24, where, inspired by the work of Babbit, he also began treating his patients with colored light. Neben seinem Engagement für Elektromedizin und physikalische Therapien entwickelte Dinshah über die nächsten Jahre die Spektro-Chrom-Methode um die Anwendung von farbigem Licht zu formalisieren.

In 1920, 10 years after emigrating to the United States, Dinshah began to introduce his method and offer training programs. A period of turbulence followed, during which Dinshah had to defend himself and his method in court time and again. While alternative healing methods were still represented in almost all medical school schedules at the beginning of the century, the climate had changed by the 1910s. Only those methods that had proven their efficacy in double-blind, placebo-controlled studies were to receive approval for healing purposes. However, since such studies are downright impossible to conduct with colored light, Dinshah later had to indicate when marketing his colored light devices that they served no therapeutic purpose. Nevertheless, there were repeated trials in which Dinshah was usually defeated. When Dinshah died in 1966, he could not have foreseen that Spectro-Chrome would once again become very significant in our time. The Dinshah Health Society, founded by his sons to provide information about his methods of restoring health, was officially recognized as a non-profit, scientific and educational institution in 1977.

SpektroChrom

Color Glasses

While the classic Spectro-Chrome method irradiates different areas of the body with colored light, our color glasses offer the possibility to take in the colors directly through the eyes. And all this without any additional equipment. The idea is not new; Goethe already came to this realization when considering color effects in his Theory of Colors: “In order to feel these individual and significant effects perfectly, one must surround the eye completely with a color, …” What is new, however, is the filter technology with which these specifications can be realized. Thanks to modern manufacturing techniques and sophisticated measuring equipment, we can offer our SpektroChrom glasses with their finely adjusted color frequencies and the highest level of saturation. The shape of the filters, adapted to the face, reduces extraneous light and ensures that colored light hits the eye from all sides.

SpektroChrom

Sounds

The application of SpektroChrom color glasses can be ideally complemented by music. When choosing music tracks, you should know that each tone can also be assigned a color. Newton already based his color wheel on the seven tones of the Doric scale, since he assumed that an analogous relationship exists between tones and colors. Dinshah also established relationships between tones and Spectro-Chrome colors. The most mathematically precise model for describing color-sound analogies is undoubtedly the Pythagorean octave principle, which is suitable for calculating exact color and tone values.

Just as the frequency of light waves determines the color of light, it is the frequency of sound waves that determines pitch. Sounds and colors can just be seen as the same phenomenon, one perceived acoustically and the other visually. Both the CoherenceSounds and NatureBeats use this analogy to acoustically support certain color effects.

Of the 12 SpektroChrom colors, 9 are pure spectral colors, i.e. they have their equivalent in a pure color frequency. Only for these a “conversion” into tones is possible. The circulatory colors scarlet, magenta and purple are colors mixed from the two far ends of the spectrum, and therefore do not correspond to any defined color frequency. The sounds of the neutral color green are suitable as a combination to the application of the circulatory colors.

SpektroChrom Sounds

NatureBeats healthily

These acoustic signals from natural sounds (so-called hidden binaural beats) merge into the soundscape and thus circumvent conscious perception.

The use of natural sounds allows the application
during many other activities (e.g., studying, reading, or intellectual work) where musical content might be more distracting. This is because the brain can more easily tune out natural sounds due to their familiarity.

For the application, the recommendations for the use of the coherence sounds titles apply accordingly; so they are listened to while wearing the respective SpektroChrom color glasses. However, it is important to note: NatureBeats work best over headphones in pure stereo mode.

He [Goethe] reads to us now about the colors, says that they lie in our eyes, therefore the eye requires the harmonies of the colors, like the ear those of the tones.
